Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 12+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

You mentioned, "If you can track the enemies skill cool downs ..." Is there an addon that does this?

Artium#1474

I think this strat is no longer viable. Failed 5 times in a row now. Whelpling gets taken down too low by first pet and dies consistently to the carrot. Something changed this patch to make losing a certainty, I do not recall submerge ever firing twice.

I think this broke in 9.1. The nexus whelping dies much too quickly.

I used Iron Starlette instead of Chrominius and she was the game saver...Nexus Whelpling died, so Starlette used 3x Powerball to finish of the carrot and then managed to kill the 3rd pet, even though I failed and activated the supercharged Wind-up when the 3rd pet was burrowed...anyways...I still won.

Ivydoom wrote on 2020-04-10 18:33:09

This strat works a lot better when the very 1st move is tailsweep and then arcane storms, then you have actually 3 aracne storm turns left with the manasurge on 2nd enemy, which will kill that before it can damage nexus whelpling and that way it survives until the burrow move of the 3rd enemy.

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-04-10 19:32:11

That sounds very plausible! I'm not sure it's necessary, but it's always nice to consider the nuts and bolts of how a strat might work better.

another not working strategy for this fight. Pandaria lists need updating badly

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-01-02 15:59:06

This one failed for me as well. I used a P/S Nexus, just to be awkward, but I don't think that was the problem; the Nexus survived to meet Brood of Mothallus, and got in one Tail Sweep, which seems to be what the strategy expects.

On both occasions, my Nexus died while Brood was underground, so Chrominius took the big hit when he came in,

My first thought is that the problem is the change to Howl (but that was quite a long time ago!). As written, in the current Howl aura, Howl doubles the damage of Bite, but not of Surge of Power. So I tried it again, with that in mind.

Howl->Bite is useless now; you will be just as well off with two Bites.

I switched the last three moves "Howl->Bite->Surge of Power" to Bite->Howl->Surge of Power, and it worked nicely.

I'm asking the Strategy Curators to have a look.

Sigri wrote on 2020-01-13 14:03:43

Worked for me just now with P/B Nexus and H/H Chrominius

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-01-14 01:09:02

Yes, Shenk edited it since the original comment. It could sometimes work in its original form, but could also sometimes fail.

Tamika#2148

wrote on 2018-08-07 13:45:15

NOTE: If you can track the enemies skill cooldowns and if Brood of Mothallus's Burrow is off cooldown you'll want to pass then go onto Howl. The current TD script doesn't track it so if you hammer the auto button it will fail. We, however, can patch this with a single line change:

if [enemy(#1).active]
ability(589) [!weather(590)]
ability(122)

if [enemy(#2).active]
change(#2) [enemy.round=1]

I use this strategy and it's worked wonders for years.

Sea Pony 2 2 2
Any level 2+ pet (needs to have at least 165 HP or be Magic to live through the one-time party damage you'll receive from Siren)
Level 25 Mechanical pet (or any strong against beasts for Mothallus).

Start the fight with Cleansing Rain which will both heal you and change the weather after Siren cast his sunny day spell. Then use Pump four times to kill Siren, while he recharges after using his main attack. Once Toothbreaker shows up, immediately use Tidal Wave to sweep away the little carrots. Bring in your level pet, do any attack, then back to Sea Pony. Use Pump to finish Toothbreaker. When Mothallus comes in, swap to your mechanical pet (I use Mini Thor usually) and just use whatever strong attacks to finish it off. Hope that helps someone!

Narinae wrote on 2016-11-05 13:17:45

This worked beautifully! I'd just note that the second action Mothallus will take is to go underground. Plan that round accordingly.

what is aura 1725 because the aura that is on the 3rd enemy pet is underground which is aura 340, it kept running the abilities even though the opponent was underground, took me a while to figure out the aura was wrong.

I use Anubisath idol here on 1, 1, 1 and 2 lvling pets - they can be lvl 1.
Turn 1 - Sandstorm
2 - Crush
3 - Deflect
rinse and repeat until siren is dead, Toothbreaker enters
1 - swap in lvl pet no 1
2 - swap back to anub
3 - refresh sandstorm
4 - Keep on with crush and refreshing sandstorm until next sons opf root when your 2nd lvl 1 pet can be swapped in. Just keep sandstorm up and crush until toothbreaker is dead.
Mothallus enters - keep up sandstorm, and use crush - save deflect for when he burrows.

First attack already kills my lvl1. Cant get this one to work.

Air wrote on 2017-10-15 19:27:20

Can you write a TD Script for this?

Ricardo wrote on 2018-01-21 05:37:43

Level pets needs to have 800 health, then works fine.

The little crocs are very good for this fight. (Chuck, Toothless, etc..)
Darkmoon Zeppelin 1,1,2
Chuck 1,1,2
Level pet - (only takes damage on one round - not two - so maybe level 6+?)

1) Decoy
2) swap to Chuck
3) Rip
4) Blood in the Water
5) Surge
6) Surge
7) Surge
8) Blood in the water (first opponent dead)
9) Surge
10) Swap to level pet
11) Swap to Chuck
12) Rip
13) Blood in the water
14) Surge until opponent Dead
15) Rip
16) Surge
17) Blood in the water
18) surge until chuck dead (bring in Zep)
19 Missile until opponent dead
Win!

With Chrominius I want to add one change:
Turn 1 - Howl (also add the bite here if his Burrow is on CD)
Turn 2 - Surge of Power (usually he dies here)
Turn 3 - Bite (if needed)

On another note. Thanks for a great page with guides :)

CoJo wrote on 2016-12-18 13:30:03

Is Chrominius' Howl supposed to go on the turn Mothallus Burrows? I've done this fight a few times now and Chrominius always ends up dying before killing Moth due to the Howl being on a Burrow'd target. I usually am having to finish with a fight to death using my leveling pet.

Using:
P/P Nexus Whelpling
Leveling Pet
H/H Chrominius

Motokki wrote on 2016-12-25 20:24:25

I found the same thing. Just add a Bite on Turn 1 so you don't waste the Howl when he burrows, and you should be good to go.

Added, thanks!

DTJ wrote on 2016-11-01 00:33:38

First attempt and it failed due to Nexus (P/P) dying to DoT after first Tail Sweep on Brood and then Chrominius's Howl+Surge combo didn't finish Brood off and thus I got wiped out.

Second attempt, Nexus survived the DoT and died during Brood's burrow. Chrominius came in and ate the Burrow attack, then did Howl > Bite > Surge and won.

This is kinda risky.

You can actually do this with a level 5 or so pet if you have Spawn of G'Nathus - Darkmoon Tonk. It just needs to be high enough level to survive the Sunlight AoE on the first turn.

Start with Spawn - use Shallow You Whole the first 2 rounds, then Dive. Then, Swallow you Whole until the first pet is dead. On Toothbreaker, use Swallow You Whole the first turn, then Dive when available (Thunderbolt if it isn't available and Toothbreaker is under ground). Spam Swallow You Whole until Toothbreaker dies.

When Brood of Mothalus comes out, leave Spawn out for the first turn (Brood will cast Acidic Goo). Immediately switch to your carry pet. Brood goes into Burrow that round, so there is no risk of the carry pet getting hit with damage. Then, immediately switch to Darkmoon Tonk. Shock and Awe - Ion Cannon blows it up.

Hey! I find my second alternative here very similar to your approach. I think that should cover this fight :-)
Thanks for the suggestion!

Well, many burst pets can finish the Brood regardless on the path chosen: the mentioned Chrominius and Darkmoon Tonk, but also Iron Starlette, Brightpaw, Fluxfire Feline and so on. The difference of 150 Elemental damage that a carry pet takes during the 2nd option here is nullified by several Cleansing Rains. But I respect that you choose to not change weather during this encounter… though it seems to be just designed to make that decision. ^^

Hi, what about a snail (Absorb/Adicic Goo/Dive)
and a non-Mech with mech attack (I have a Mechanical Axebeak)?
No idea about breeds tho.

Aranesh

wrote on 2015-11-21 10:38:34

The Axebeak is super strong against Mothallus, but you still need a different pet for the first two enemies. Snails sadly stand no chance against Siren. Well actually it's the same both ways because they just are not able to kill each other with Sunlight and all their healing effects going on ^^

On today's test, Chrominius' Howl missed Mothallus because he was starting his Burrow, but I used it anyway. Surge of Power was still plenty to finish him off, though.

LuLu, the Arcane Storm in the first turn changes the weather, since the opponent was faster.

I usually do what I think of as the "standard" Skimmer-or-strider and Tonk strategy.

I just tried this strat now, and was blown away that it actually worked! :) I don't know whether I'm more amazed that we're using a Nexus Whelpling without Mana Surge, or that a low-health Whelpling killed a full-health Toothbreaker with Tail Sweep alone, but it's awfully cute. :D

LuLu wrote on 2015-05-11 11:34:39

No weather changing later to end the healing benefit?

Aranesh

wrote on 2015-05-14 03:50:40

That's usually not required :-) The strat works fine like that as well
