Substitutes:

Note: You have selected a substitute pet.
The strategy might fail if you use it with this pet instead of the one the strategy creator intended.

The substitute finder looks for these criteria in relation to the original pet:
  • Same family
  • Has the required skills
  • Has the required stats (if specified)
  • Ignores specific breed requirements for the main pet, as breeds can be very different for substitutes

High XP
At least one of the pets for this strategy require the use of a specific breed.
Not every strategy can be bullet proof. This is one of them. You might have to restart it, since there are some random elements that increase the risk of your pets failing. Don't blame them, please!
This strategy is using pets obtainable from the Wow Trading Card Game (TCG) or the auction house for potentially high sums of gold.
This strategy is using pets obtainable only from the WoW In-Game Shop for Battle.net Balance or real money.
Level 2+
You can use this strategy to carry a low level pet to give it experience.
Some instructions are more difficult to follow than others. That's exactly what you might find in this strategy!
Script
The strategy offers a Script that can be used with the Pet Battle Script addon. You can copy the script by clicking on the button to the left of the pets.
At least one pet in the strategy cannot be obtained anymore. If you have it, congrats!
A Strategy Curator found this strategy to be especially helpful and higlighted it with this tag to give it more exposure.
In Dragonflight Patch 10.2, the ability Time Bomb has been changed. This tag is marking strategies using Time Bomb so they can be reviewed.

One of the hardest fights in Draenor. It is not suitable to use for leveling a pet as it takes way too long and is unreliable.

I have used this several times and so far it has always worked. I really like how this strat utilises the Dark Rebirth and Undead rounds for pet swapping!

Serpe

wrote on 2021-07-10 15:55:33

Does not work anymore! Lantern dies and heals the first hit of Gyrexle who then builds the Rocket that kills the Infinite Whelpling with about 3/4 HP left...
I tried this tactic about 50 times now and the result is always the same!

Very poor strategy, fails 4 out of 5 times. Need a crit from infinite whelping to succeed.

wrote on 2020-03-26 20:03:27

The script sometimes ends the fight right after you kill the lamp and the last pet comes in. not sure why... Actually I do. it seems when you two shot the lantern it ends the fight but if it takes three hits to kill the lantern then the fight keeps going so maybe something needs added to account for a possible two shot (edited)

thatguy181

wrote on 2020-05-01 14:37:46

That's because you need to 3 hit the lantern to make sure you start with the dragon damage buff on the robot or you can't win (unless your level pet can take the robot down itself, which it likely can't if it's a low level getting XP) (edited)

Great strat thank you! Helpful comments on here also make this fight possible. With crits and different breeds it's hard to tell how many Crab's snaps you can use.

1. Idol of Decay will cast Dark Rebirth when its HP is 350 or below. (swap to level pet - takes 1 hit) Whatever you do, DO NOT kill Idol while Dark Rebirth is up or it will get full health.

2. Kill Lantern before Wish is activated (after 2 rounds).

3. Early Advantage will hit Gyrexi hard, its health will be very low and forced to repair for 3 rounds. You kill it while it's repairing. If for any reason your Early Advantage didn't hit hard enough he will use rocket --- then you are screwed and probably need to restart.

agreed did not work for me for this reason

This strat isn't working for me, I have an Emperor Crab P/P and he get Idol to 450HP but he can't seem to kill The Idol with just one snap after renewing mists. Hereso, My infinite whelpling dies the second the third pet enters the round. What can I do ?

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-03-11 12:31:17

I would check it out, but this is a tricky strat, and nothing has changed for either the crab or the whelpling, so I have to guess you are making a mistake somewhere. Can you log the battle, either by your Pet Battle log in your chat box, or with the addon Pet Battle Log Keeper (and do /pblk and press Save Battle when finished?)

Gráinne

wrote on 2020-03-11 13:34:01

OK, so I went and looked. P/P Emperor. Level 1 Chrominius, which I didn't notice, so it died. Ignore that. Log below Compare it with yours to find the difference.

This strat as written doesn't work anymore. I think the mechanics have changed.

The crab does too little damage (312 hp per Snap) so you have to actually do a fifth Snap in order for the Idol to cast Rebirth. My leveling pet (Humanoid) that I brought in when the Idol was at 365 hp took a 650+ hit but was level 15 so it didn't die.

I haven't tried this, but ...

There are separate instructions for H/H and P/P breed Emperor Crabs, and in both cases, with the Whirlpool hit, the numbers do seem to add up for me. The Emperor Crabs haven't changed stats ever (which is great!) but I have to wonder whether you were using one of the alternative crabs that are automatically added by the Substitutes function. If you were, I think it's quite likely that the alternative Substitute crabs don't work the same way.

(If u want lvl on second pet rotate him in and go to terror)
Use natures ward

Natures ward continually Sunlight on CD
after back pets are dead you can kill first pet with water jet and sunlight

Using my HH Emperor Crab, I found that the Idol of Decay will cast rebirth when his health gets less than 350 HP. I followed steps 1-3 as written and starting with step 4 I looked at the Idol's health. If is was more than 350 HP I used another Snap. When the Idol's health dropped below 350 HP then I continued on with step 5.

Great strat, however, if you take out the lantern with two tail sweeps, the wish will be active when Gyrexle enters the fight. This will will prompt him to Launch rocket instead of repair which will kill your whelpling. I'm using P/P whelpling. Maybe another breed would lessen the chance of this happening.

I rewrote the script (and added a small change to the start) because of a couple of rng issues. Namely;
1. You can sometimes crit Idol of Decay into its Undead round before he casts Dark Rebirth, at which point you need to quit and reset, and;
2. You can sometime take the Lantern out in 2 Tail Sweeps which will leave Wish active on Gyrexle. When this happens, you need to stall Early Advantage for 1 round.
3. I added Renewing Mists at round 2 and have it refresh on the round after Idol uses Dark Rebirth. This ensures that neither your carry pet or whelpling will be hit by Rot.
4. Your whelpling can sometimes catch a bad run on Gyrexle and die so I added a line to bring the crab back in.

quit [ enemy.aura(Undead:242).exists & enemy.ability(Dark Rebirth:794).usable ]
ability(Whirlpool:513) [ round=1 ]
change(#2) [ enemy(#1).hp<320 & !enemy.aura(Undead:242).exists & !self(#2).played ]
change(#1) [ self(#2).active ]
change(#3) [ enemy.aura(Undead:242).duration=1 ]
ability(Renewing Mists:511) [ !self.aura(Renewing Mists:510).exists & enemy(#1).active ]
ability(Healing Flame:168) [ enemy(#2).active ]
ability(Early Advantage:405) [ enemy(#3).active & !enemy.aura(Wish:274).exists ]

Tony wrote on 2018-11-11 07:54:48

Didn't work at all. Must be some RNG involved.

Jere wrote on 2019-02-21 00:29:03

Most of the RNG would most likely come from breeds. When I submitted the strat, I specified P/P crab and P/P Infinite whelp. If using those, then the only RNG comes from crits (either the enemy's or yours depending on where in the fight you are). For example, if your crab gets one crit off on the idol of decay then he may use rebirth early. You have to look at the idol's health to decide if you need to do the carry pet swap early or not. The only place a crit should be able to completely mess it up (off the top of my head) is if you get 2 crits on the lantern and kill it one round early. The strat relies on having the dragonkin racial up when you face the mechanical gnome enemy so early advantage gets him in killing range.

I do not use ability(#1) anymore in script, because it say ability(#1) and not what spell you want to use. Some pet battles would not work if you use another pet with same abilities because ability 1 and 2 has changed position.

lvl 12 - 19 pet and lvl 1 pet ( Optional if you want to lvl 2 but they share lvling points )

It is a long fight must warn you
Attack with first pet (try not to hit too hard). (Cycle through 2nd pet if used)
Switch to Puddle of Terror open with Natures Ward then sunlight then Natures Ward till cd for Sunlight repeat till back 2 pets are dead, then you can also use Water Jet to help finish him off. ( Has work almost every time )

I tried several methods and this one seemed to work best. I had a Emperor Crab H/H 1,1,2 a Infinite Whelpling P/S 1,1,1 and a level 5 level pet.

Start with crab and do
WHIRLPOOL
SNAP
SNAP
RENEWING MISTS
SNAP
SNAP
SWAP TO LEVEL PET AND IDOL WILL CAST REBIRTH (as long as you dont hit him the rebirth will drop off)
SWAP BACK TO CRAB (rebirth is now gone)
RENEWING MISTS
SNAP
SWAP TO WHELPLING ( idol dies)
TAILSWEEP
TAILSWEEP
TAILSWEEP (lantern dies)
HEALING FLAME
EARLY ADVANTAGE
TAILSWEEP
TAILSWEEP
TAILSWEEP
EARLY ADVANTAGE (whelpling dies)
BRING IN CRAB
WHIRLPOOL
SNAP (crab dies but you won the fight)

My level pet went from level 5 to 11.

**** IF AT ANY TIME YOU HIT HIM WHILE REBIRTH IS STILL ON END THE FIGHT AND START AGAIN****

the key here is to not hit him while he has rebirth on if you swap or pass after he casts it will drop off.

Having used this stategy since the fairly early days of WoD: It does work. However, now in BfA and with a guildie of mine who also does pet battles, she has a H/H Crab, where I have a P/P Crab, and she has multiple issues with this particular fight, where I have not. True, it was a bit getting use to, but once you've done it enough (every day for over 4 years plus/minus a few days).. Point is, the Strat will be slightly different or a lot different if your Crab is a HH instead of P/P. My Whelpling and the Whelpling my guildie has are both P/B - That too most likely poses a change.
Also, it's worth (imo) to mention that if Idol has exactly! 450hp left after 1 whirlpool and 2 snap, and if your Crab is P/P, do 1 more snap, before swapping in your lvl pet (that ofc has to be lvl 2+) and then swap back to Crab and follow the strategy from Turn 6

But you're all ofc welcome to try your hand on making a reliable easy to use strategy with pets that aren't too hard to aquire... Those of us, who'se done Pet Battles for a long time, has all sorts of pets, but there are those who's stable aren't quite as full :)

I've found that the current #2 strategy (Teroclaw Hatchling and Untamed Hatchling) is far more reliable than this one because both those pets only come in one breed. I currently run it exactly as stated there, and have never seen enough crits to get him to Dark Rebirth too early.

If it were up to me, I'd swap this and the #2 strat.

Szuzsika wrote on 2017-09-16 01:58:01

Eekwibble wrote on 2017-10-17 20:44:10

If you mean 'uses Dark Rebirth' rather than 'resurrects', you are correct, well, almost. Idol of Decay actually triggers Dark Rebirth at around <1/6hp. It has 1769hp, so, if you work on the premise that it will be cast when below 300hp, you'll be pretty accurate.

Because if I do that snap with my emperor crab (H/H breed) in the 4th turn, the Idols hp will be below 450, but over 250 (tested 5-6 times). Yes it's simple: another snap is missing from here.

Aranesh

wrote on 2017-01-13 07:46:43

Hey Smoggy! The timing is exactly calculated so that during rounds 5-7 the Idol will cast Dark Rebirth - which falls off a round later, and it will then not rebirth at all when you kill it in round 9.
If that was not the case for you, you must have done a critical hit or one Snap too much in the beginning.

Argent wrote on 2016-12-27 13:31:54

The write-up for an H/H crab doesn't quite work. Whirlpool + 3xSnap brings the Idol down to 365 health, which is not low enough to force it to use Rebirth on #5. Another Snap (for 312 damage) does the trick though. So the strategy with H/H should be:

1. Whirlpool
2-5: Snap (x4)
6: Swap leveling pet in (Idol casts Rebirth, leveling pet takes one tick of its DoT)
7: Swap Emperor Crab back in
8+: Proceed as written (Renewing Mists, Snap, swap Infinite Whelpling in, etc...)

Jay wrote on 2016-12-21 16:00:13

this strat doesn't work--the inf. whelpling takes too much dmg from the lantern each time and so it doens't last long enough against hte gnome who heals himself all the way up in one cast.

Saintgabrial wrote on 2016-12-24 14:26:03

I tested a P/B and P/S Infinite Whelpling they only failed a couple times when my whelpling got a crit by the lantern. Tested it 12 times, six each breed and each breed failed once. So I can only think that your missing one of the moves listed or you have super bad luck and getting too many crits from the Lantern.

Make sure you use Healing Flame as soon as you bring in the Infinite Whelpling.

When Gyrexle comes in and you hit him with (Early Advantage) he should start to repair himself and one Tail Sweep should kill him the first time and the second Tail Sweep should kill him. He should never get that heal off.

Duskbunny wrote on 2016-10-22 16:11:40

For the H/H crab. The extra snap after turn 4 seems to fail the fight for me. However if I move the extra snap to just after turn 7, it has not failed me so far.

Oops, never mind. Apparently the other times I did it, the hits were harder and the Idol never hit Rebirth. If he does, then yeah, your way is better.

I love your strategies; thanks for keeping them up to date! If your H/H Emperor Crab criticals on the 4th Snap, it throws the timing off. You can still swap in your levelling pet, but you'll have to figure out when to bring in your Infinite Whelpling. Healing Flame is a must on the first turn against the lantern, so if you miss it, abandon and retry.

A.mazing. I always had the worst time with this, hands-down, of all the trainers (and as XuFu still says below, I couldn't imagine working in a leveling pet!) This strat is amazing.

Much better Alternative than the first one, I tried Alternative 1 numerous times and even tried a modified version but couldn't win. This one worked first time and didn't even look close to failing.

After some consideration, I agree - this one is now the primary strategy.

This strategy worked a treat for me today, but your first strategy failed me three times. I think this one is also much better as it's less complicated. Thank you!

With Guardian Breed (rare), you need one more Snap in turn 5, and change in turn five to timming the ressurect

That, is brillant :D Thank you ! I changed the strategy accordingly!

As a quick note, you don't really need a level 12+ carry for the crab/inf whelp strat. As long as you can survive a tick of swarm of flies (most level ones except for undead) you should be good. Love the site. Comments spill out over your border boxes though in Firefox.

Very true! Thanks Jere, I changed it :-)

Hey, just wanted to point out a spelling error on turn 9. Really dig your strategies by the way

this is the best strat I use. I see you cleaned up some alt strats across the board, as long as you keep this one lol
